It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To

What am I crying about?

The fact that I have already tragically FAILED at this plan.   Pure gluttony has overcome me and I've eaten so much junk (especially cake) and drank so much beer that it is ridiculous.  Also, I have not run...AT ALL!  Still at a whopping 5 miles since my half marathon 2 weeks ago.  The only positive is that I added an extra CrossFit class Saturday morning.  A hangover+CrossFit= a Saturday of unproductivity.  Post CrossFit, I was useless.

What else am I crying about?

The fact that I'm 27 today.  Seriously.  Typing that brought tears to my eyes.  Why is 27 so much harder to swallow than 26?

Enough with the pity party....

I'm going to celebrate my birthday by having a Pronia's muffaletta for lunch, doing this WOD after work (and I'm going to attempt it as prescribed! Eeek!), and having breakfast for dinner (per my request) at my parent's house.

My new goal: be active every single day for the rest of the year. That means at the very least, walking with my brownie.

I'm off next week, so maybe I can throw in a couple of 2 a days.  Since I seem to have no self control when it comes to food, I will focus on exercise.  Then, start fresh in the new year.

How did you celebrate your last birthday?  Did it involve cake or exercise or both?

'Tis the Season to Eat & Booze

While I have been uber productive on the home front (ie. Christmas shopping, wrapping, baking, laundry, crafting, etc.), I have negleted all forms of exercise.  In the past 9 days, I have CrossFitted twice and ran 5 miles. That.is.it.

To add insult to injury, countless spoonfuls of cookie batter, bowls of ice cream, and beers have been consumed.  Oh, and there is all the cake happening this week.

The closer Christmas becomes, the busier I am, and the easier it is to skip workouts.

So, I am developing a game plan.

Tuesday (today) - 6:30 CrossFit.

Wednesday (mom's birthday) - 4 miles before work.  Steak dinner at mom & dad's, but I'll skip the potato and cake.  Maybe a glass of wine instead?

Thursday - 6:30 CrossFit.  This means I'll have to miss the Glenlivet scotch tasting at Hokus Pokus.  :(   With all the upcoming boozing, I guess I don't really need to go drink scotch anyway.

Friday - 6 mile run or bleachers before work, because 6:00 PM at Burton for Cowgirls vs. LSU.  Dinner out afterwards as an early birthday celebration.

Saturday - 8 mile run. A couple of graduation parties that afternoon and evening, which probably means lots of food and cocktails.

Sunday (dad's birthday) - trail run with Andrea (hopefully the 4.5 mile loop).  Dinner at mom & dad's, skip the cake.

Monday (my birthday) - 5 mile run.  Cake of course!  But only one piece. And one scoop of ice cream.  And a hot toddy, because you only turn "21" once...or 7 times. :)

Tuesday - CrossFit.  Book club Christmas party.  More food and drinks.

Are you seeing the theme of lots of celebrating with food and cocktails?

The plan of attack is to skip the stuff I can live without (mom's german chocolate cake, dad's pineapple cake, baked potatoes, etc) and have small portions of the stuff I need to survive (my carrot cake, beer, steak, beer, ice cream, beer, etc).

I hope you are still reading and not bored out of your mind by this post, but by putting it in writing for the world to see, I am much more likely to stick to it!

Giddy Grocery Trip and Other Good Things

Great things that have happened lately:

1.  Both Tuesday and Wednesday I arrived home to find packages at my door.

I love mail packages.  Especially when they are prizes I won from giveaways!

Not only did I recieve these oats and this adorable paisley bowl from Tina @ Trading Up Downtown (she also writes over at Carrots 'N' Cake) on Tuesday....

But also this smorgasbord of chips from Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco on Wednesday.

Thanks y'all!

2.  I finally did some Christmas shopping!  I'm a long way from done, but at least I started.  And the gifts are already wrapped and under my tree!

3.  Kroger had an insane sale on produce.  When I returned home and unpacked all my purchases, I was giddy with excitement!

The motherload.  Excuse the bad lighting...almost every bulb in my kitchen is burnt out.  And obviously the martini set was not a purchase on my grocery trip.

Highlights:
-all varieties of pear for $1 per pound. I bought one of each.

- 6 kiwi for $1

-organic braeburn apples for $1.25 per pound

- roma tomatoes $1 per pound (I haven't bought a tomato since God was a boy because I prefer not to purchase them out of season, but for this price I couldn't pass them up!)

-yellow onions for $0.77 per pound (that is half their normal price!)
-sweet potatoes for $0.49 per pound
-$1 for a bag of 8 poblano peppers and a cucumber from the clearance produce section (I didn't know the cucumber was hiding in there until I got home...bonus prize!)
-$2.99 for 5 pre-made veggie shish-kabobs full off zucchini, squash, red onion, and mushrooms

I already grilled these up with some shrimp.  Yum!
- free bag of salad (I had a coupon)
- $0.79 for a quart of mint chocolate soy milk (it was marked down to $1.34 and I had a $0.55 coupon.  I've been wanting to try this but there was no way I was going to shell out $3 for a quart!)
-Kroger brand now carries frozen brussel sprouts! There frozen veggies are alwasy $1, and I keep broccoli, green beans, pepper mix, and spinach in my freezer at all times.  I'm so happy I can now add brussel sprouts to the stockpile!

Also on sale: eggplant 10 for $10 and blackberries 10 for $10.  They were out of both, but the sale lasts through Wednesday, so I'm sure I'll be back.

4. My half marathon medal was added to my medal display. :)

5. I reached my 100th post!  This post is actually 103...I completely spaced and didn't even realize this was post 100.

Good things that are happening soon:

1. 8 workdays, then I am off for 11 days!

2.  McNeese Cowgirls are playing LSU this Friday night.  Since all my friends will be there, it is becoming a sort of birthday party for me.  Basketball and beer at Burton for Becca's Birthday!  (since Burton Collesium is off campus, they are allowed to serve beer at NCAA games!)

3. Cake!  And lots of it!  Mom's birthday is Wednesday, dad's is Sunday, and mine is Monday.  That means german chocolate on Wednesday, yellow cake with pineapple (??) on Sunday, and carrot cake Monday!

Funny Birthday Ecard: May your birthday and Christmas presents not be combined.
I always insist that my birthday presents not be wrapped in Christmas paper!

Look at me...all positive and optimistic!  I'm definitely getting off probabtion in December!

Tell me something good.

The Harlequin & A Piece of Cake

Friday night, I celebrated my great-aunt and great-uncle's 50th wedding anniversary by joining my family for dinner at The Harlequin.

There was a recommittment ceremony, but I skipped that part of the celebration because a) it was all the way in Sulphur and b) I wouldn't have been able to CrossFit at 4:30 and be showered in time.

50 years of marriage is truly an accomplishment.  My parents have been married for 34 years and my maternal grandparents have been married for over 50 years.  My paternal grandparents were married until my mawmaw passed away, and my pawpaw never remarried. I feel blessed to have such successful role models when it comes to marriage. I know without a doubt that if I one day do get married, it will truly be until death do us part.

Back to the food.

My sister and I arrived to the party after everyone else.  It was a little chaotic when we walked in, because the private room was in use by another group and there were more in our group than the restaurant expected.

They moved as fast as they could to add tables to our little corner of the restaurant and get everyone seated.

The Harlequin is sort of a Lake Charles institution.  It is a family owned steakhouse, passed from generation to generation.  The walls are adorned with family portraits and various Louisiana themed memorabilia (There is quite an homage to the King Pin, Earl K Long).

There are 2 smallish dining rooms and the bar area.  I love that the restaurant is broken up this way, because it makes the experience much more intimate.

Service was slow, but that is expected with such a large group.  By the time we were served our entrees, I was almost too tired to eat.

I ordered the 7 oz. filet, medium rare with a side of sauteed mushrooms.  It came with the house salad, which was iceberg greens and one cherub tomato.  I opted for the poppyseed vinagrette and did not like it at all.   It tasted like red onions.   Although, every single bite of that salad was devoured because I was famished.  (My sister liked the dressing so I think it was just a matter of my tastebuds' aversion to red onion.)

My steak was cooked to perfection.  I took the bacon off, and cut right in.  The outside had a crisp sear and the inside was buttery smooth.  Exactly how I like my steak.  The mushrooms were good, but a little salty for my taste.

No one else was overly impressed with their meal.

What everyone was impressed with was the wedding cake.  It was from A Piece of Cake.

There were 2 layers: pineapple and traditional wedding cake.  I devoured nibbled a piece of the traditional. (had to carb load for my long run the next morning, right?!?)

The cake was fluffy and light, while the icing was almondy and sweet without being too sugary sweet.  I hadn't had cake this good in a long time.

I wonder if they sell cake by the slice?  That could be trouble...

My final assessment -
If you are looking for somewhere to have a nice steak dinner with a good atmosphere, the Harlequin might be your place.

If you are looking for somewhere to buy a delicious cake, A Piece of Cake is your place!

Do you prefer to eat steak in a restaurant or at home?
At home.  Not my home, but my parents home.  A la Chef Dad.

Do you have will power against wedding cake?
I can't ever go to a wedding and skip the cake!
